Rahway NJ Apartment Fire

A late night fire ripped through an apartment complex under construction Tuesday, destroying the complex. Rahway firefighters were dispatched to St. Georges Avenue and Stone St. for a reported structure fire around 1:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found a four story apartment complex, with heavy fire showing from the middle unit.

Firefighters immediately went to a defensive attack due to the construction and fire conditions. Handlines as well as master streams were put into operation along with Rahway Ladder 10. The fire quickly traveled throughout the complex and across the entire cockloft.

The Union County Mutual Aid Task Force was activated bringing additional resources to the scene. Additional master streams were put into operation as well as tower ladders from Rahway, Linden, Elizabeth, Clark and Cranford. Heavy smoke continued to push from the structure for hours until the fire broke through the roof just before six o’clock in the morning.

Firefighters continued to flow water onto the complex throughout the day dousing hot spots. The fire was declared under control at eleven a.m. by the incident commander. Mutual aid from Linden, Roselle, Clark, Cranford, Garwood, Kenilworth, and mountainside responded to the scene bringing the fire to a fourth alarm.

This apartment building was of prefab construction brought onto the site and pieced together. Members on scene reported the construction had been ongoing for several years.
